In conjunction with the Hand Tools Show coming to Chehalem, Oregon this Spring, our old friend Brian Boggs will be stopping by on Tuesday, May 15th from 5 to 8 p.m. He'll demonstrate some steam bending and other techniques he employs to create his extremely comfortable and elegant chairs.

For those of you who are not familiar with Brian's work, he's one of our nation's top chairmakers. Hailing from Berea, Kentucky, he builds chairs and tables, designs tools for Lie-Nielsen, and enjoys fishing whenever he can fit it in. Besides building excellent furniture, of which we have examples here at the Studio, Brian is also a supurb communicator. He teaches the "Ladder Back Chair" workshop at the Studio here in Portland once again next summer, 2008.

Contact us to sign up for a lecture and demonstration which will shed some light on the very particular challenges of chairmaking, as this is sure to be a popular evening!

In this two-week course, Brian Boggs will guide students through the process of building one of his signature ladder back chairs. His chair design and construction techniques improve upon similar chairs that have been made in Appalachia for over 100 years. Students in this class will have the opportunity to work with green wood in building this two slat ladder back chair.

Students will split the wood from the log, shape parts with drawknives and spokeshaves using shave horses, turn the hickory rungs, steam bend the curved maple parts. Brian will cover the appropriate tool use in building this type of chair. This will include his methods of sharpening the tools. Chair design will be discussed during this course. Brian will demonstrate his methods of producing chairs in his shop. He will have each student construct their own bending form for the steam bent curved parts.

Woodworking experience is required to be successful in this course. This course is limited to 10 students. Please note: there will be class held on July 4th.

What folks say about Brian's workshops:

"I am still on a high from the workshop! "

--Joe Tuohey, Knoxville, Tennessee

"Brian, I was at the seminar you gave to the Rochester Woodworker's Society. It was one of the best seminars I have attended there. You have a highly technical grasp of wood and all the surrounding influences as well as the machining, etc. Your seminar was really great."

-- Ken Root, Black North Wicker

"Successful chair design is part intuition, part creativity, and part plenty of work. Learn how to think about chair design, ergonomics, utility, comfort, and beauty as you build a model of your design. The thousands of beautiful chairs Brian has made attest to his skill as a craftsman and designer. Chair design makes you think about proportioning, structure, engineering, joinery, and grace in a way no other piece of furniture does. This will be a fabulous week as you work with probably one of the best chair maker/designers in the country learning to build your chair idea."
