The pleasure of working with hand tools is often what lures many woodworkers to our craft. And with good reason. But getting the results you came to woodworking for requires a real understanding of what is happening at the business end of the tool. In this class you will gain a clear understanding of just how each tool works. While we will not build a project, we will certainly build your skill level so that all your future projects at home will be much more pleasurable.

The tools we will work with are hand planes, spokeshaves, drawknives, carving knives, hand saws, drill bits, and chisels. Bring your own tools and tune them as well as you can before class. If you want to work on tools not on this list, bring them with you and we will use what time there is to go over them. Some tools will be available to use, but you will want to take advantage of this opportunity to tune your tools during class. You will also want to have your own sharpening stones to work with.

While this class is on green wood chairmaking, what is learned is an understanding of wood and some unique approaches to woodworking that will apply to just about every project you will undertake. Working with the green wood poses certain challenges but also is a great way to get a real sense of wood and how it behaves. The basic skills are quickly learned.

We will begin with green maple billets for legs and slats, steam bending the legs the first day. All the parts will be shaped on the shaving horse with a spokeshave. We will cover compound drilling holes both free-hand and with a drill press. Mortises can be chopped by hand or routed.

By the end of class all students will complete a two-slat ladder back (mule-ear) side chair with a hickory bark seat.

Brian Boggs has been making chairs in Berea, Ky for 22 years. His work has been featured in numerous museums and galleries nationwide as well as over a dozen books. He has written several technical articles for Fine Woodworking and Woodwork Magazine and has been teaching workshops around the country since 1988. While many of his chairs adorn the homes of the well-to-do, a large portion of his work is purchased by other woodworkers. Sam Maloof, Christian Becksvoort, Garrett Hack, Tom Lie-Nielsen, Kelly Mehler and many others have recognized Brian's work not only as fine work and good design, but a good value as well. Brian brings to his classes a unique mix of technical problem-solving as well a as a good sense of efficiency.
